The company specializes in creating digital twins of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) – complex schematics crucial for visualizing the intricate network of pipes, equipment, and control systems within a plant. Traditionally, these diagrams were only available on paper, making them difficult to access and update.
Challenges
The client planned to use AI to improve efficiency and safety within their clients’ plants. To reach this goal, we had to address the two following challenges:
- Digitalizing P&ID Diagrams: The company needed to convert paper-based Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) into digital formats. These diagrams represent the intricate workings of a plant, but manual digitization was time-consuming and prone to errors.
- Streamlining Information Access: Plant staff often require quick access to information about various plant components. Searching through extensive documentation can be inefficient and delay critical maintenance tasks.
What We Offered
Zazmic developed two AI-powered solutions hosted on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to help the client achieve their goals.
Automated P&ID Digitization
- We designed and trained a custom object detection model using YOLOv5 to accurately identify and classify symbols within P&ID diagrams.
- Leveraging Google’s Document AI, we processed scanned PDFs to extract text and layout information.
- The tool outputs a JSON file containing a comprehensive list of detected objects, their types, labels, and precise locations within the diagram.
- This process enables the creation of digital twins of P&IDs, facilitating efficient plant operations and maintenance.
AI Chatbot Assistant for Instant Information Retrieval
- We developed a custom chatbot using Dialogflow integrated with a powerful vector database for knowledge search.
- Technical documents were processed using Document AI and converted into a searchable knowledge base.
- Plant staff could interact with the chatbot to ask questions about specific components or maintenance procedures.
- The chatbot leveraged Gemini to understand user intent and retrieve accurate information from the knowledge base.
